Description

The underlying principle for the Honningsvåg plan, which was designed following World War II, was to zone the town according to function: industrial-, harbour-, residential- and town centre areas. Along the seaside the central areas were reserved for fisheries and industry. The business premises were organised alongside the street Storgata, acting as a buffer zone between the harbour and the residential areas, which were situated directly opposite on a slope. Civic functions such as the town hall, community centre and school were gathered around the central square - the meeting square.

Through the reconstruction plan, a town which has previously had a disorderly building pattern was replaced with organisation and order. Nevertheless, the post-war plan was primarily based upon the old roadway system and the area's natural conditions - but some of the streets were adjusted. In this respect, the plan carried on many of the structural principles that had previously appeared to work well here.
