"Skallelv" (5 of 11)
Description
During the period from 1900 to 1920 very few new houses were built, but many of the existing ones were altered and modernised. Stylistic elements were copied from Vadsø where the Swiss chalet style was in vogue. The organisation of the houses became more specialised and new window types and detailing were introduced. The oldest houses in Skallelv had gables facing the road, but now they were altered and extended sideways so that the ridge of the roof became parallel with the road. By doing this, the upstairs now could have three rooms with windows instead of just one as previously.
