"Krigsgravplassene på Tjøtta" (3 of 5)
Description
A stonewall encloses the Russian gravesite. At the bottom of the site it opens up into a wide field with a wrought iron fence and gate. From the gate, the terrain inclines evenly upwards towards a large memorial monument, created by the sculptor Gunnar Janson and decorated with the Soviet Union star with a hammer and sickle. On each side of the axis lie the graves - one field for those identified and another for those unidentified. Towards the west, facing the sea, there is a chopped axis in the forest. Therefore the high-rising monument stands independently and is seen from both the ship's channel and from the country road.
