Description
Bjarne Instanes provided the structural engineering services for the construction and the foundations. Unlike most other buildings in Longyearbyen which have pile foundations going through the active layer into the permafrost, this is actually built on rock. That is, the active layer was replaced with compacted rock fill on top of the bedrock.
As coal fired district heating is an unusual technology in Norway, expertise from Denmark were called in for setting up and running the plant. The plant is fully automated.
