In spite of representing just a short period of time the cemetery is regarded as a national historic monument because of its importance for the identity of the catholic congregations in Norway in general but especially in Finnmark. Alta District Council has created a small park between the burial ground and the main thoroughfare E6. A new St Joseph's Chapel is situated to the south of the cemetery.
