Description

Hålogalands gate 45 A (street address), also referred to as the "Kind House," was erected in 1928 for Per Kind, who was the clerical officer at that time. The house is one-storied with a large loft and was designed by the architect Sigurd Bjørhovde, son of the building contractor John Bjørhovde. The façade has features from both Classical architecture and Jugendstil. The corners with a column motif and the projecting triangular forms above the windows are characteristic Classical features. Whereas the half-hipped roof, roof dormer with mansard roof and the round window on the central dormer, are all elements that are often associated with wooden buildings in the Jugendstil. The south facing balcony is semicircular and is supported underneath by a pilaster that appears reminiscent of a plant stem. References to organic forms are also a typical feature of Jugendstil. The house, which is harmoniously decorated on the exterior, is clad with vertical panelling that is painted grey, with white painted details on the corners and around the windows.
