"Narvik kirke" (3 of 5)
Description
On the interior the church is wide and tall, with a central nave and two side naves. The central nave has a flat wooden ceiling and the side naves have brick vaults. Rows of concrete, colossal columns dominate the interior and support rounded arches on each of the long sides. A tall parapet panel dominates the choir, along with a portal-shaped altarpiece - both with a Baroque quality. The altar panel was painted by Eilif Peterssen (1852-1928) and depicts Jesus in Gethsemane. The unique baptismal font was created after drawings done by Johan Olaf Nordhagen. The symbols of the Evangelists - the lion, eagle, ox and an angel encircle the baptismal font. All of the four symbols have wings which show signs of 1920s Art Deco. The colour theme of the interior was carried out by Domenico Erdmann (1879-1940).
