Description

The kiosk was designed in 1919 by Peter Arnet Amundsen (1872–1958) who was an architect and Tromsø's "statskonduktør" (a now historic post heading planning, surveying, planning permissions, building regulations etc). His client was Oline Hansen (born 1861) and her kiosk's original site was at Fridjof Nansens Plass (by the foot of the bridge). The kiosk's footprint measures 2x3.5m and has a simplified, yet of its time, ambitious style. The wooden construction stands on a stone plinth and the walls have wide pilasters crowned with lamps instead of the traditional wooden capitals. The cornice has a pronounced protrusion and is also decorated with a row of dentils. The hipped roof sits on a low wall both clad in copper and the roof gutter is elegantly hidden between the cornice and this wall. The entrance to the kiosk faces Nordre Tollbodgate and the door is narrow with three raised panels. The customers were traditionally served through the lower opening part of the windows. The wall under the windows has raised panels and where there are no windows there is fine narrow vertical cladding. The building is painted ochre with contrasting green window frames, pilasters and cornice.
