Description

The seven pavilions for patients are set out in a north south direction along the terrain, though not on a line, and one-storey corridors connect them. There are a further three buildings for communal functions, administration and technical services. The hospital's original programme specifically required the architects to use a humane, friendly scale. The architects resolved this by varying the units' heights, adding right angle wings and actively exploiting the natural variations of the terrain by for example utilizing lower ground floors and stepping the roofs of the connecting corridors. Access is also at the eastern side where the buildings are lower and thereby more welcoming compared to the rather sterner impression when seen from the west and the sea. The colors of the external walls vary between the pavilions, though all have white window frames. Old aerial photographs suggest that there was originally a greater variation of colors than there is today. The administrative and finance departments are situated in the centre of the complex in the same way as they were in the old style asylums. An assembly room and the staff canteen are also in this area. The main entrance with reception and waiting rooms are centrally placed on the eastern side facing the road Åsgårdvegen.
