"Tromsø domkirke" (2 of 4)
Description
The church, a long church built from timber using the cogging joint method, was consecrated in 1862. Yet due to lack of funding, the steeple, sacristy and entrances on the long sides had not been built. In 1862 the steeple was finished and in 1863 the organ. The long walls in the nave are reinforced with turnbuckles that are finished like pilasters. Between each turnbuckle there are stately Late Gothic windows. The entrance extensions, on the long sides, provide stability for the construction. In the east, the choir is narrower and lower than in the nave. It terminates in a half octagonal form. The main entrance is located at the foot of the steeple, which is situated in the west and rises far above the ground. The division of the exterior walls is characteristic of a wooden church that is an imitation of a Gothic long church made of stone.
