Description

Technical interventions as roads are considered a major threat to biodiversity. The Lofoten Mainland Connection (Lofast II), completed in 2007, was the largest project in Europe at the time that did not use soil, fertilizer, or seeds from other locations. During construction, local vegetation was removed, stored temporarily, and then replaced as the top layer along the new road. The natural vegetation has reestablished itself right up to the edge of the asphalt. Today, there is a rich diversity of species adapted to the local conditions.
