Description

Around 1920, several of the leading families in Tromsø built leisure houses in the inner part of Balsfjord, often idyllically located by a lake. This is true for the Trangen cabin, which was built by county doctor Bertram Dybwad-Holmboe. Here, his surname initials, made in wrought iron, are seen on the old front door. Back then, it was strenuous to reach Inner Troms, as one first had to take the boat to Tennes or Storsteinnes and then continue on poor roads. The first road from the coast, past Takelvvannet and to Øverbygd, was completed around 1915. The road through Lavangsdalen was not finished until 1936, and it was often closed in winter.
