Description

It is generally assumed that the church was designed by the road construction engineer Nicolai O. Saxegaard who was employed by the county of Troms from 1900 to 1920. Living in Harstad he engaged in local politics and was also for some time the towns mayor.
The church’s design and decorations are consistent with gothic revival/Swiss chalet style and this may indicate that it might have been a prefab made in southern Norway. However, this theory has not been confirmed. The building contractor was Mathias Hansen from Harstad, so yet another possibility is that the detailing was his work.
Tovik Church has listed status in accordance with the Norwegian Cultural Heritage Act.
