The days of Trastad as a regional institution came to an end during the 1990s following major reforms, which transferred care for people with learning disabilities to the local authorities. Some of the original buildings are now occupied by the Trastad Collections, which is a museum of the history of people with learning disabilities and their art, sometimes described as outsider art.
