Description

The first garden at Jennestad is thought to have been laid out in 1905 and had more or less the same location and size as today's garden. It was then away from the residence which in those days were incorporated into the large warehouse on the wharf. Building garden walls of stone and wood was the first work to create shelter from the northern winds. It was used for entertainment and play
the young people would play croquet and tennis and there was a play area for the children. Trees, shrubs and perennials were planted and old photographs show
white picket fences and a well building just like today.

The little summer house was built in 1912-13 before the main residence was completed in 1918, and it is shown on a garden plan dated 1916 which might be the work of August Nielsen. The garden is laid out in strict symmetry with parterre and gravel paths but becomes less rigid as one gets closer to the wharf. The gravel paths have been recreated and the garden now has many mature trees which would have been planted in the early 20th century.
