Description

The altarpiece measures 1.7 x 1 m and depicts Jesus on the cross. To his right stands his mother Mary and to his left John the Baptist and next to each of them sits a soldier turning his back on it all. In the background there are buildings and a dark sky full of flashing lightening.
From the central picture straight lines shoot outwards to the side panels, downwards to the altar and upwards to the baldachin. The side panels are decorated by stylized flowers, stars and St. Andrew's crosses. The intention behind the surrounding design is to create a dramatic perspective, which enhances and magnifies the drama of the crucifixion. The alterpiece was a gift from the Danish interior designer Arendal Jørgensen. The completed piece is the result of collaboration between the architect Finn Bryn, the painter Carsten Lien and the wood carver Hanna Jessen. Finn Bryn also designed the pulpit, the baptismal font and the two wedding chairs.
