"Sagfjord kyrkje" (2 of 5)
Description
The layout of the church is axial and symmetric. The doors and passages are on the mid-axis, leading from the outer stone steps, through the porch and central nave through to the choir and the semicircular altar area. The circular shift around the altar breaks the axis and marks this area as an important centre of the church. In addition, the door to the sacristy and a mid-positioned window in this end wall lie on the main axis of the church.
The nave, with its twelve rows of benches on either side of the central aisle, provides places for approximately 130 people. The benches are open, with no markings other than simple pointed sidepieces. The gallery over the entrance section also has benches, placed in an amphitheatre shape on either side of a central aisle, looking out over the choir and pulpit. The nave receives particularly good light from two high-level, pointed windows in each of the long walls. The ceiling gives the room a lofty air and the constructive elements are open, as part of the decoration. These are painted a light blue and stand out against the light ochre elsewhere in the interior. The choir is raised one step up from the nave but, unlike the nave, is low-roofed, with the crossbeams visible. The circular altar space and panel occupy almost the whole of the little choir.
