Description

Stegelnes Chapel is now the oldest church building in the municipality of Vardø. The chapel is rarely mentioned in written sources dating before the last war. Elderly people tell of isolated funerals there, but most people wanted to use the main church. The burial ground, on the other hand, was used regularly and was extended as early as 1921. While the chapel was in little use, maintenance followed suit. In 1957, the chimney-stack was in such a bad condition that restoration was required. After that, another 30 years elapsed before there was any interest in maintaining the little chapel. An appeal was launched, supplemented by funding from Riksantikvaren (Directorate for Cultural Heritage), and the restoration of this house of God was eventually completed in 1997. Since then, not only funerals but also weddings and christenings have taken place at Stegelneset.
