"Vardø kirke" (3 of 3)
Description
The area of worship in Vardø Church is large and has a good acoustic. The roof, supported by slender concrete pillars, has wooden cladding internally. The choir is narrower and lower than the nave of the church. The altar picture is a ceramic work by the artists Margareth and Jens von der Lippe, created during a visit to Italy. At the top is the dove, in the middle the Christ-figure with a small choir around, and at the bottom birds in foliage, fish, flowers and ears of corn. These are ancient Christian symbols, each of which has its own particular meaning. In their juxtaposition here, they may be said to depict “Heaven, Earth, God and Man – in the person of Jesus Christ – all within the framework of the Trinity”.
The old altar picture dating from 1895, entitled “It is finished”, was painted by the artist Axel Ender. This was carried to safety when the old church burned down during the Second World War.
The organ in the gallery over the church entrance was made by the firm J. H. Jørgensen in Oslo in 1957. It is electropneumatic and has 17 2/3 real tones (20 rational stops and 2 transmissions).
The christening font and the pulpit, together with the rest of the interior, are designed by the church’s architect, Eivind Moestue.
