Description

Remarkably, the construction of the quay wall was carried out without the use of a binder. On a few occasions ties were used to level off the connecting points of the stones, but this was an exception. After the wall was completed, the quay was equipped with vertical fenders. These fenders were made of wood and had double cushions. They were fastened to the wall with iron bolts. A layer of concrete was laid on top.

Today, when one descends one of the many flights of steps, one can still see traces from the wedges. The holes where the crane hooks were attached are also visible. During low-tide the contours from the hessian sacks can vaguely be seen. By now most of the fenders are gone. Attempting to preserve the fenders proved difficult and required a lot of maintenance work. The remaining iron bolts, which were left exposed once the wooden fenders disappeared, caused a lot of damage to docking boats. As a result, the old wooden fenders were replaced with used car tyres.
