"Botn - tysk krigskirkegård" (2 of 3)
Description
German soldiers who fell during the Second World War (1940-1945) in North Norway were relocated to two war cemeteries, set up in Botn and Narvik during the period 1956-1960. The stone plaque sited on the wall in the entrance house at Botn shows the plan of the cemetery and explains that this has been set up as a co-operative venture between Germany and Norway.
The war cemetery that had been established on Stormyra in Botn by 1960 was funded and maintained for the most part by the Norwegian authorities. The landscape architecture and stonework in the entrance house and the grave memorials were funded by the German authorities, who also make a contribution to the upkeep by donating maintenance machinery, which is used for both the German and the Yugoslav war cemeteries.
