Tollboden, Hammerfest's Custom House is situated more or less at the very harbour front and at the end of Sjøgata which is now mainly a shopping street. The design of the Custom House is very typical of many Norwegian public buildings from the post WW2 reconstruction era with modern materials such as reinforced concrete, brick and rendered external walls. The load bearing system was often highlighted as a grid in the exterior by use of relief and contrasting colours and this is also the case on this building.
