Between the blocks facing Kirkegata is the main entrance with a vestibule on one level, with a gradually-sloping gable roof. This low section of the building is emphasized by the use of red-brick in the wall.

The town hall in Hammerfest was inaugurated in 1958, designed by the architects Schetlein &

Tønseth in Trondheim. They won an architectural competition amongst Trondheim architects, which was first launched in 1951 with no result. It was relaunched in 1953 and the winners were chosen in the summer of 1954. The competition was a gift from the Trondheim Architectural Association to the town of Hammerfest, while the city of Trondheim send a financial contribution towards the building of the town hall.
