Description

The Southern-Varanger Police Station is situated in the Kirkenes town centre, on an incline between the edge of the sea and the town hall. Despite its central location, the police station is discretely situated in relation to the business premises and the pedestrian street. FAK Arkitekter was the firm appointed for this commission. Construction started June of 1998 and the building was completed in December of 1999.

The buildings in Kirkenes show signs of reconstructed architecture, with relatively narrow building shells and saddle roofs. In the Police Station this form of expression is continued, but modernised. The site also influenced the form of the building. The end result was a long and narrow three-storied building with a pedestal and saddle roof. It was partially constructed with cast-in-place concrete, while the remaining part of the building was built with a timber frame and covered with yellow brick.
