Description

From the start, Kiilgården was a house with a central hallway, with a symmetry bestowed by the beautiful empire portal facing the sea. During the 1890s, the building was extended by a large room on both floors, i.e. the two casement windows on the left in this photograph. At the same time, the building was given new panelling with a ‘flat’ appearance, as well as new windows and window frames, all in a typical late empire style. The veranda facing the sea was most probably built at the same time, where the old main entrance with the empire portal had been. The slate tiles on the roof were also probably added then. During the first half of the nineteenth century, turf and roofing using brick tiles were usual at trading stations, whereas slate tiles came in afterwards, during the second half of the century.
