"Fabrikkaia" (2 of 3)
Description
The reconstruction of the quay was completed in August 2007. As far as possible, the present-day quay is a copy of the original quay. At the start of the landing, the four initial poles form a reference area, where the new quay has been reconstructed along the lines of the documentation concerning the old one. This area reveals all the methods that were used in the old construction with regard to the choice of materials, joinery and foundations.
The remainder of the quay is a copy of the original with regard to its size and construction. Here we find the same number of building elements (various forms of struts, surfacing and poles) as in the original quay. However, the distance between the poles has been harmonized and there are no longer variations in size. The same applies to the joinery, and here only binding hooks and traditional quay spikes have been used.
The warehouse, or "gongen" as it was originally called, is built and held together with Canadian pine. The building was originally open to the north and south, so as to provide good ventilation. After the Second World War, walls were built on the north and south sides too, at the same time as it was divided into rooms. The boathouse is clad externally with horizontal panelling, which today is painted ochre.
