The district heating system transfers the heated water to the buildings through insulated pipes in overground network where water, waste water and heat run side by side. The overground pipelines are a major visual characteristic of the Lonyearbyen townscape. However, they are gradually being replaced by insulated pipes laid in rock filled trenches on top of the permafrost and covered by top soil.
