Description

Towering high above the fjord and town the Aerial Ropeway Junction Building stands in sharp contrast to its surroundings, though seen in isolation it only relates to the trestles showing the way to the old mine entries. The ropes and buckets being gone and the gates that let them in and out of the building closed, make it harder to understand why it is all there unless one knows the history of the place. Some of the trestles near the junction have been removed long ago and will not be reinstated. However, a nearby trestle on the oldest ropeway was rebuilt in 2007 to make the connection to the junction building clearer. The whole complex of installations from the mines to the junction building is of great historical and cultural significance for Longyearbyen and the wider Arctic area.
