Description

This photo shows the governor's administration building, in the foreground towards the right, and the governor's transport centre in the background. The transport centre was constructed in 1956, in order to coordinate the various cable cars from the coal mines in the valley, to the nearby shipping port. The overall design of the building is made up of large rough dimensions, providing an aesthetic quality. The design was of great visual significance for the governor's estate - during one period, the cable car line ran directly over the courtyard. The structure was in this respect, "built in" by the Large Norwegian Spitsbergen Coal Company (Store Norske Spitsbergen Kullkompani), which operated the mines.
