Description

The old cottage, one of the buildings that were not destroyed during the German retreat in 1944, has two guest rooms. The old interior is intact and this cottage has its own red two-seater outside (non-water) privy.

The mountain lodge keeper manages the property on behalf of the Norwegian Agricultural Agency. The post is normally passed on from one generation to the next in the same family. The first keeper was named Songomotka and the next person to take up the post was Anders Olsen Romsdal who in 1859 was grated an extra amount of 5 Norwegian speciedaler (the old currency) to stock the lake Joatkajávrrit with fish to secure a steady supply of fish to eat. A few years later the Eriksen family took over and their descendants are still running the mountain lodge, which today has a restaurant serving quality local food and has a capacity of 30 beds.

Jotka Fjellstue can be reached on foot or by boat across Joatkajávrrit during the snow free seasons and in the winter on skis or by snowmobile. The keepers can also use terrain vehicles.
