"Alta kraftstasjon" (2 of 5)
Description
With the growing number of power stations constructed into the sides of mountains on stable bedrock and the large landscaped areas that were incorporated into power plant complexes, landscape architects played an increasing role in the construction of power stations. The landscape architect commissioned for the Alta complex was Knut Ove Hillestad. The waste rock dumps, the dam and structures like the portal buildings were designed to be visually integrated with the landscape. One important condition for the construction of this power station was its integration with the landscape. In addition, it was not supposed to be provocative, considering the protest against and discussion surrounding the development of the Alta River. The portal buildings are nearly camouflaged, by means of form and materials, making them only visible from a short distance.
