"Elvebakken" (5 of 5)
Description
The boathouse is situated on the shoreline, on the lower side of the road dividing the property. The boathouse is a half-timbered construction with panel cladding. This is where the boat that was used for local fishing in Balsfjord was taken up when it was not in use.
Following the hay harvest in August, the men were occupied with saithe (mature coalfish) fishing with nets on the fjord. The saithe was exchanged for goods from neighbouring farms and from the wholesaler. Line-fishing continued locally throughout the autumn, and fish and herring were caught for home consumption. In January it was usual to travel to Finnmark for the cod-fishing, where the men hired a mooring space, just as they did in Eastern Finnmark for the spring cod-fishing.
