"Boliger i Hansjordnesbukta" (1 of 7)
Description
The seven council houses in Roald Amundsens gate, Rektor Horsts gate and Johan Jensens vei are situated in the area named Hanjordnesbukta just north of Tromsø’s city centre. Each building is set just off the street and thereby form a large communal outdoor space/garden at the back. The terrain slopes gently towards east and the garden has a patch suitable for ball games.
The buildings are built in the same architectural style and with the same materials. The external walls are painted in matching pale red, yellow, and blue as well as green and ochre. The sense of unity is further underlined by white windows and light grey decorative elements.
This housing project was the work of Peter Arnet Amundsen (1872-1958) who was at the time both an architect and Tromsø’s Stadskonduktør (a now historic post heading planning, surveying, planning permissions, building regulations etc.), and it was part of wider building programme of council houses around 1920. The buildings and materials were mainly moved from Salangsverket, a then recently defunct iron ore processing community in the south of the county, and re-erected in Tromsø between September 1917 and 1920. Indoor WCs were installed in 1938 and in 1990 a major renovation and upgrade took place. All units are still in council ownership.
