Austad-bygget was built at a time when Tromsø was awaiting the establishment of its new university. The ground floor was designed for shops and the first to the third floor for offices. The fourth floor with a set back front wall is used as accommodation for visiting university lecturers. Below ground there is a cellar including a bomb shelter, all built in waterproof site cast concrete as it is below sea level.
