The block of bedsits was built on the initiative of Tromsø Kvinneråd (a coalition of women's organisations) to create accommodation for single women in need and was partly financed by donations. It now belongs to the foundation Stiftelsen Hybelhuset Strandskillet 3. This was also Tromsø's first high-rise building and really was then quite a contrast to its surroundings which mainly consisted of two storeys with attic and basement.
