Description
The former Tromsø Cook and Stewart School is situated on the corner where Vestregata meets Kemnerbakken. It was built in a 19th century quarter consisting entirely of wooden buildings. During the period from 1960 to 1990 the wooden buildings were replaced by four storey concrete buildings with a recessed fifth storey in accordance with the town development plans from 1947 and 1978.
Vestregata 33 consists of two cuboid volumes connected on a right angle. Along Kemnerbakken its front is moved back from the rest of the street frontage, and due to the sloping terrain the volume along Vestregata appears a storey taller. The construction is site cast concrete, which has been rendered and painted white on the exterior.
The volumes and the elevations are well proportioned, typical of late functionalism (the Nordic term for early modernism). The Cook and Stewart School was among the first concrete buildings with some architectural merit to be built in Tromsø, and it signaled the beginning of the era leading the turn of the millennium when Tromsø would no longer have a predominantly wooden city centre.
