Description

Hansine Hansen's farm is now partially reconstructed. An old house (from roughly 1850) was moved from the Tromsø town centre (where the Courthouse stands today) and placed on the tufts of grass where the farmhouse once stood. It was refurbished in 2002. Today it houses meeting rooms for the university and serves as a gathering place for the group Friends of the Botanical Garden. During the summer, the Friends of the Botanical Garden keep the house open to visitors of the garden, as a resting place and café. In the spring of 2004, the new service building was erected where Hansine Hansen's barn had previously stood. It is traditional in form and was designed by Borealis Arkitekter A/S. The service building houses the public lavatories, an office, storage/work room, along with a break room and changing rooms for the garden's staff.

The traditional garden is located near the site of the old farm courtyard. Ornamental plants, used in gardens in Northern Norway over 100 years ago, are the main feature of this research based collection. Situated adjacent to the farmhouse are hardy and popular plants such as blue monkshood, rhubarb, tansy, red currant and rowan trees.
