Description

The Rieber Warehouse (shown on the left), was run by the Rieber Company. It was a versatile company dealing in Arctic Ocean operations. It included a shipping line, a processing department and sales department. Opening in 1923, the company moved to a new location in 1968, across the sound to Tromsdalen. Since then, the building's exterior has been refurbished and currently houses offices.

In the 1980s, the Bangsund Warehouse, which for many years housed a timber company, became the first youth house in Tromsø. Today it is a student recreational building.

The Aagaard Warehouse, which is now often referred to as the Kjær Warehouse, was a versatile commercial company throughout the 20th century - today it houses offices.

The Tollbod Warehouse is the only existing old warehouse in Tromsø, which still stands in its original location, on columns in the intertidal zone. Near the old customs office, the natural intertidal zone is the last existing of its kind in the entire town centre area. Elsewhere the waterfront is consumed by quays and buildings. The Tollbod Warehouse was established in 1833 and was built as a storehouse for the customs office. Since 1978, it has been home for the Polar Museum and includes a rich collection of objects related to the business community and to Arctic research. In 2000, the Tollbod Warehouse, along with the other buildings from the old customs office Skansen, were declared listed buildings.
