The bridge is a cantilever bridge, where the middle part is built after the "free forward"- principal (system Dywidag), and was the first of its kind in Norway. This means that three metre sections were cast in the open air from an arrangement on each side of the sound - in order to meet in the middle. The deck of the bridge was stretched with 27 pairs of columns, which are supported by foundational piles under water.
