Description

The Jakhelln residence (street address: Sjøgata 15) was designed by Gudolf Blakstad and Herman Munthe-Kaas and was completed in 1947. Sjøgata 17 was also designed by the same architects and was completed in 1957. Blakstad and Munthe-Kaas designed multiple central buildings in Bodø during the reconstruction period, such as the town hall and cathedral. The Jakhelln residence was designed for Christian Albrecht Jakhelln and was one of the first of reconstructed buildings done by Blakstad and Munthe-Kaas in Bodø (the drawings date to 1943). During the 1980s the residence underwent extensive renovations and façade alterations facing the street Sjøgata, with Torbjørn Stein as the commissioned architect.

Here is a view of the building from the quay. This section has retained its characteristic reconstructed features. The lift tower makes clear references to windlass housings found on old wharf warehouses. The façade is covered with mineral plaster, a type of plaster supplemented with mineral mortar, providing a grainier surface texture.
