 Vardø gamle barneskole

Vardø gamle barneskole ( Old Primary School in Vardø)
When the new school was opened in 1888, there was only a need for four classrooms. Citizens of the town mocked the grandiose plans of the local council, which had built a school that was extremely large and much too extravagant. However as time passed and the number of citizens increased, the size of the school was too small to accommodate for all of the students. In order to relieve the caretaker's inhumane toil with keeping all of the heaters lit, central heating was installed. The solution was to jack up the entire building and then excavate a cellar (1935). This work was completed without the loss of a single school day.
