Kongsbakken Upper Secondary School is located high above the Tromsø town centre. Due to the fact that the schoolyard and park are situated on the lower side, the school is easily visible from the east from the town centre and the mainland/Tromsdalen.

Kongsbakken is a large rectangular building with a lower ground storey, two main stories, along with a third storey which is situated below the mansard roof. The building is located on a gradual sloping terrain with entrances that lead from the school square to the lower ground storey. The main entrance however, is located in the middle of the building towards the west, near the street Petersborggata. The middle of the building is marked by a number of different elements, namely the design of the main entrance, a projecting section with a gable located above. Not to mention the octagonal tower that is situated on a pedestal, and can be seen from a distance. Kongbakken's facade has apparent Classicistic elements such as a symmetric construction centred on projecting middle section. This offers associations to temple gables from antiquity's Greek and Roman architecture. The large mansard roof and tower on the other hand, are modelled after the Baroque style. This blending of different genres, into a harmonious and pleasant entity, is something that was typical in the 1920s and of this architect as well.
